  2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced to build a Gandhi Heritage Centre in Uganda’s Jinja, where a statue of Mahatma Gandhi now stands.
  • Prime Minister Modi is currently on a five-day three-nation tour of the African continent-Rwanda, Uganda and South Africa.
  1. BRICS Summit 2018 begins in Johannesburg

The 10th edition of BRICS Summit began in Johannesburg, South Africa on July 25, 2018. Attended by all the BRICS leaders, the BRICS Summit 2018 will be held from July 25 to July 27.

  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s three-nation tour of Africa, which began from Rwanda, will culminate in South Africa.
  • Theme of BRICS Summit 2018 is ‘BRICS in Africa: Collaboration for inclusive growth and shared prosperity in the 4th Industrial Revolution’.
  1. 4 Indian-origin persons in Fortune’s 40 under 40 list

Four persons of India-origin, including three women, have been named by Fortune among 40 of the most influential and inspiring young people in business under the age of 40.

  • Instagram co-founder and CEO Kevin Systrom and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, both 34, are tied for first place on the Fortune ’40 Under 40′ list.
  • Chief Finance Officer (CFO) of the US’ largest automaker, General Motors Dhivya Suryadevara  comes in at the 4th spot, followed by Vimeo CEO Anjali Sud (14), co-founder and co-CEO of Robinhood Baiju Bhatt (24) and Female Founders Fund founding partner Anu Duggal (32).
  1. Thaawarchand Gehlot Attends Global Disability Summit 2018 in London

Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot, Union Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment attended the Global Disability Summit held in London on 24th July 2018.

  • The motto of the Conference was to firm up the commitments of the country leaders towards the cause of persons with disabilities.
  • The Global leaders expressed their commitments towards elimination stigma and discrimination, promoting inclusive education, economic empowerment, technology and innovation in assistive devices, data desegregation etc.
  • Besides India, global leaders from more than 40 countries attended the summit and have committed themselves to work in the direction of economic empowerment of persons with disabilities.
  1. Union Home Minister to inaugurate the 2nd Young Superintendent of Police Conference

Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh, will inaugurate the 2nd Conference of Young Superintendent of Police being organized by Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D).

  • The two-day conference will be attended by over 100 Superintendents of Police and senior officers from the States and CAPFs.
  • The theme of the Conference is “Predictive Policing and Contemporary Challenges for Indian Police Forces” and aims to create awareness among young Superintendents of Police and Commandants regarding latest technologies in areas of Artificial Intelligence; Predictive Policing/ Crime Analytics/ Big data Analytics; Geospatial Technology; Cyber Crime; Surveillance Tracking & UAVs; CCTV Equipment, for effective delivery of Police Services to citizens.
  1. September to be celebrated as National Nutrition Month every year

Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India has organized 2nd meeting of National Council on India’s Nutrition Challenges under POSHAN Abhiyaan on 24th July, 2018 in New Delhi under the Chairmanship of Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog.

  • September, 2018 will be celebrated as National Nutrition Month and this will be celebrated every year.
  • The Government of India has set-up POSHAN Abhiyaan (National Nutrition Mission) which was launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on 8thMarch, 2018 from Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan.
  1. Karnataka overtakes Tamil Nadu in renewable energy

Karnataka is the new national leader in renewable energy generation, US-based Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) said.

  • It has overtaken Tamil Nadu that had long been India’s top renewables market.
  • With a population of more than 60 million, Karnataka has a total of 12.3 gigawatts (GW) of renewable capacity installed till March, after having added five GW in 2017-18 alone, it said.
  1. Invest India and Business France Sign Mou to Promote Investment

 

Invest India and Business France have signed an MoU to promote investment facilitation and cooperation between startups of India and France.

  • The goal will be to facilitate direct foreign investment by providing practical investment information to enterprises and support the companies pursuing those opportunities which contribute positively to economic growth of the two countries.
  • Invest India and Business France will collaborate to promote business and startup ecosystem cooperation through joint activities and exchange experiences to strengthen institutional knowledge and identify opportunities between businesses in the French and Indian private sector, creating a dedicated support structure to facilitate inbound companies and startups.
  1. Panel to review third party motor cover costs

Insurance regulator IRDAI has constituted a 16-member committee to examine motor third party insurance pricing aspects and make recommendations on the premium rates for 2019-20.

  • This is for the first time the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India has formed such a committee.
  • IRDAI Member P.J. Joseph will be the chairman of the committee.
