  1. Nelson Mandela Day: 18 July

Nelson Mandela International Day (or Mandela Day) is an annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela, celebrated each year on 18 July, Mandela’s birthday.

  • The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009.
  • Mandela Day is a day to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s former President.
  1. MoU signed between AIIA and IIT Delhi

The Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik inaugurated Raising towards Excellence – A two day Conference of Heads of AYUSH National Institutes organized by All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) at New Delhi.

  • The conference is organized with a vision to develop National AYUSH institutes as light house institutions, streamlining quality in research, hospital care facilities, education, harmonization and rationalization of infrastructure and activities, and forming uniform service guidelines.
  • The purpose of this conference is to upgrade the status of AYUSH institutes at par with IITs and IIMs.
  • This event was also witnessed the signing of a MoU between All India Institute of Ayurveda and Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi.
  1. National Conference of State/UT Ministers-in-charge of Women & Child development

A high level National Conference of State/UT Ministers-in-charge of Women & Child development was held in New Delhi.

  • The meeting was chaired by the Union Minister of Women and Child development, Smt. Maneka Sanjay Gandhi.
  • The National Level Conference was held with the objective to discuss issues pertaining to safety of women and children as well as Poshan Abhiyan with the purpose to direct and seek the support of State Governments to further their effective implementation.
  1. Gujarat to form Sanskrit Bhasha Vikas Board

In order to promote the Sanskrit language, the Gujarat government has decided to form the Sanskrit Bhasha Vikas Board.

  • The decision was announced by state education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama at an event held at the Gujarat University.
  1. India accounts for 1/5th of global deaths from floods

India accounts for one-fifth of global deaths due to floods, according to government data.

  • As many as 107,487 people died due to heavy rains and floods across India over 64 years between 1953 and 2017, according to Central Water Commission data.
  • Damage to crops, houses and public utilities was reported to be Rs 365,860 crore.
  1. Five PSBs to get Rs 11,337 cr fund infusion

The government is going to infuse Rs 11,337 crore within next few days in five state-owned banks.

  • The capital infusion will be made in Punjab National Bank (PNB), Allahabad Bank, Andhra Bank, Corporation Bank and India Overseas Bank (IOB).
  • The latest round of infusion is aimed at helping the banks meet the regulatory capital requirement.
  1. Committee set up to synergise NCC and NSS

Government has decided to set up a committee under the Chairmanship of Shri Anil Swarup, former Secretary, School Education, with suitable representations from NCC, M/o Youth Affairs and Ministry of HRD to suggest measures to strengthen National Cadet Corps (NCC) and National Service Scheme (NSS).

  • The Committee will deal with on issues like expansion, strengthening training infrastructure, rationalizing resources, reducing manpower deficiency affecting NCC and NSS.
  • The Committee will also submit recommend for building synergies between these two institutions viz. NCC and NSS and further strengthen them for empowering the youth.
  1. Sangita Kalanidhi award for Aruna Sairam

 

Carnatic vocalist Aruna Sairam has been selected for this year’s Sangita Kalanidhi award of the Music Academy.

  • The executive committee of the Academy unanimously selected her for the award, said N. Murali, the president of the Academy.
  1. Actor Rita Bhaduri passes away

Veteran actor Rita Bhaduri has passed away. The actor, who was last seen as Imarti Devi in TV show Nimki Mukhiya, was 62.

  • In her over three decades-long career in the entertainment industry, Rita acted in over 70 movies and 30 TV shows
