  1. NSG plenary meeting held in Jurmala, Latvia

The 28th Plenary Meeting of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) was held in Jurmala, Latvia On 14th and 15th June 2018.

  • The NSG plenary meeting was chaired by Ambassador Jānis Zlamets of Latvia.
  • The NSG reviewed the developments since the last meeting in Bern in 2017.
  1. Ashwini Kumar Choubey releases 11th Common Review Mission (CRM) report

Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare released the 11thCommon Review Mission (CRM) report of the National Health Mission.

  • Speaking at the function, Shri Choubey stated that India has registered a record 22% reduction in MMR since 2013, which is the highest percentage decline so far when compared to all the previous reductions in MMR as per the earlier rounds of SRS.
  • “Maternal Mortality Ratio of India has declined from 167 in 2011-2013 to 130 in 2014-2016. It is because of the joint efforts of the Ministry and the States.
  1. Grand Finale of the First Hardware edition of Smart India Hackathon 2018

The Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Shri Prakash Javadekar inaugurated the 5 day Grand Finale of Smart India Hackathon 2018 – Hardware edition through Video conferencing in New Delhi.

  • Hardware edition is the first of its kind innovative initiative by Ministry of HRD to provide national platform to young technical minds of India to showcase their disruptive innovations and creative products which can bring out revolutionary changes in crucial sectors like agriculture, health, clean water, waste management, automotive, smart communication, and education.
  • The Hardware edition is the sub-edition of SIH2018.
  • The Grand Finale of the Hardware Hackathon will be a 5 days event and will take place simultaneously at 10 prestigious institutions (Nodal centers) across India.
  1. The 3-day NATIONAL YOGA OLYMPIAD-2018

A 3-day National Yoga Olympiad was inaugurated at the National Council of Educational Research and Training in CIET in New Delhi by Mr. Eric Falt, Director and UNESCO Representative of the New Delhi Cluster Office for India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

  • This is the third consecutive year of National Yoga Olympiad of NCERT and this year about 500 students from 26 States and 4 RIEs are participating in the Olympiad as compared to the participation of students from 25 States/UTs last year.
  • In his welcome address, Professor Hrushikesh Senapaty, Director, NCERT brought to the attention that the Olympiad creates awareness about a scientific and holistic way of living and the purpose is to create positive attitude among all human beings and promote peaceful living in the society.
  1. Col Rajyavardhan Rathore inaugurated European Union Film Festival

Minister of State (I/C) for Information & Broadcasting and Sports & Youth Affairs, Col Rajyavardhan Rathore inaugurated the European Union Film Festival.

  • The opening ceremony was followed by the screening of Slovakian movie “Little Harbour”.
  • With a selection of 24 latest European films from 23 EU Member States, this years’ film festival brings some unusual stories for the world cinema enthusiasts.
  • The European Union Film Festival is organized by Directorate of Film Festivals, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India partnering with the Delegation of the European Union and embassies of EU Member States in various city film clubs.
  1. Government to team up with Google for flood forecasting

Union Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Shri Nitin Gadkari has expressed hope that collaboration with Google will help in effective flood management in India.

  • Central Water Commission (CWC), India’s apex technical organization in the field of Water Resources, has entered into a Collaboration Agreement with Google.
  • CWC would use state-of-the-art advances made by Google in the in the field of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and geo spatial mapping for effective management of water resources particularly in the field of flood forecasting and dissemination of flood related information to the masses widely using the dissemination platforms developed by Google.
  • This initiative is likely to help crisis management agencies to deal extreme hydrological events   in a better manner.
  1. Ivan Duque Wins Election to Become Colombia’s President

Youthful rightwinger Ivan Duque won Colombia’s presidential election, promising “a new generation” of leadership for Columbia.

  • With 98 per cent of the ballot counted, Mr Duque had 54 per cent of the vote.
  • Mr Duque will be sworn in as the country’s new leader on August 7.
  1. ICICI Bank Board appoints Mr. Sandeep Bakhshi as Wholetime Director

 

The Board of Directors of ICICI Bank Limited has decided to appoint Mr. Sandeep Bakhshi, as Wholetime Director & Chief Operating Officer designate, ICICI Bank.

  • His appointment as COO will be for a period of five years, subject to regulatory approvals.
  • He will take over as the COO from June 19, 2018, or on the date of regulatory and other approvals, whichever is later.
  1. Oriental Bank of Commerce awarded for Atal Pension Yojana

 

Oriental Bank of Commerce has been awarded as the best public sector bank for Atal Pension Yojana for the year 2017-18.

  • MoS for Finance Shiv Pratap Shukla presented the awarded to Mukesh Kumar Jain, MD and CEO of the bank.
