  1. Hyderabad to host CFSI’s Intl Children’s Film Fest next month

Several film personalities are expected to attend the 20th International Children’s Film Festival (ICFFI) to be held in Hyderabad between November 8 and 14.

  •  The festival, also called ‘The Golden Elephant’, being organised by Children’s Film Society, India (CFSI), will be hosted by the Telangana government jointly with CFSI and the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
  •  A record number of 1,402 entries, drawn from as many as 109 countries, have been received by the CFSI in various categories, including animation, documentary and short films.
  •  The theme for this year’s festival is ‘New India’.
  1. India’s First Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra for Skilling in Smart Cities

To bring momentum in skilling through collaborative efforts, the Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh along with Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Shri Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated India’s first Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra (PMKK) for Skilling in Smart Cities, in collaboration with New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC).

  •  The ministers also laid the foundation for a Skill Development Centre at Moti Bagh and a Centre of Excellence at Dharam Marg, New Delhi.
  •  Affirming synergies with the Government of India’s flagship programs, the new skill development centres underscore the commitment of the Ministry of Urban Affairs & Housing (MUHA) and the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) to support skilling in smart cities.
  •  National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), an executive arm of MSDE, has collaborated with New Delhi Municipal Council Smart City Limited (NDMCSCL) to extend cooperation for setting up of PMKK Centres for Smart Cities, to provide skill training for unemployed youth through its short-term training (STT) module and contribute to the capacity building of municipal employees through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) program.
  1. Sitharaman to attend Southeast Asian defence ministers’ meeting

In her first foreign visit as defence minister, Nirmala Sitharaman will travel to the Philippines to attend a Southeast Asian defence ministers’ meeting which is likely to review the regional security architecture including China’s growing assertiveness in the South China Sea.

  •  China claims sovereignty over all of South China Sea, a huge source of hydrocarbons.
  •  However, a number of ASEAN member countries including Vietnam, the Philippines and Brunei have counter claims.
  •  India has been supporting freedom of navigation and access to resources in the South China Sea in accordance with principles of international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
  1. Madhya Pradesh tops in digital initiatives: Survey

Madhya Pradesh has emerged as the top state in terms of digital initiatives undertaken, with a maximum score of 100.1 on performance index, followed by Maharashtra at 99.9 and Andhra Pradesh at 99.8, says a report by Coeus Age Consulting.

  •  Chhattisgarh (97.4) and Karnataka (95.3) occupied the fourth and fifth positions in the list, respectively.
  •  The report is based on a comparative assessment of digital initiatives by 36 states and Union Territories.
  1. RBI sets up task force to develop public credit registry

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has set up a high-level task force to develop a comprehensive public credit registry (PCR)

  •  It is an extensive database of credit information for India that is accessible to all stakeholders.
  •  The 10-member task force is headed by Y. M. Deosthalee, ex-CMD, L&T Finance Holdings.
  1. EEPC India, PNB ink MoU to provide easy finance

The Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC) of India and Punjab National Bank (PNB) singed an MoU to provide access to finance for the small and medium enterprises and merchant exporters of the council.

  •  The public sector bank will provide finances with assurance that loans up to Rs 10 crore would be provided within six to seven weeks at competitive rates.

  1. Rakesh Asthana appointed CBI special director

Gujarat-cadre IPS officer Rakesh Asthana has been appointed the special director of the CBI.

  •  Asthana, a 1984-batch IPS officer, had been serving in the Central Bureau of Investigation as additional director.
  •  Gurbachan Singh has been appointed as Special Director of Intelligence Bureau (IB).
  •  Deepak Kumar Mishra and Sudeep Lakhtakia have been promoted as Special DG in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
  •  Rajesh Ranjan and AP Maheshwari have been promoted to the ranks of Special DG in the Border Security Force (BSF).
  1. Centre appoints Shri Dineshwar Sharma as its Representative in J&K

In a major development, the Centre today appointed Shri Dineshwar Sharma, former Director of Intelligence Bureau, as the Representative of Government of India to initiate and carry forward a dialogue with the elected representatives, various organizations and concerned individuals in the State of Jammu and Kashmir.

  •  Shri Sharma will initiate a sustained interaction and dialogue to understand the legitimate aspirations of the wide cross sections of society, particularly the youth in Jammu and Kashmir and communicate them to the State Government and the Centre.
  •  The move comes in the wake of various steps taken by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to address the needs of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
  •  It may be recalled that during his visit to Srinagar on November 7, 2015, the Prime Minister had announced a package of Rs 80,068 Crores for the overall development of the State.
  1. IPPB appoints Suresh Sethi as its MD & CEO

India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) has appointed Mr. Suresh Sethi, the former MD of Vodafone M-Pesa Ltd. as its Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer.

  •  Mr. Sethi had been selected by the Banks Board Bureau from amongst top contenders for the post, from both public and private sector Banking and Fintech professionals.
  •  Mr. Sethi takes over from the dynamic leadership of Mr. A.P. Singh who had been the interim MD & CEO of IPPB since January 2017.

Points to Remember

  •  IPPB has been incorporated as a Public Limited Company under the Department of Posts with 100% GOI equity.
  •  IPPB plans to leverage the unparalleled reach of the India Post network to achieve a Pan India roll out of 650 branches by early next year.
  1. Alok Kumar Pateria appointed as ADG, CISF

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri Alok Kumar Pateria, IPS (MP:86) as Additional Director General, CISF on deputation basis

  •  He appointed has been made for a period upto 31.05.2020 i.e. date of his superannuation from the date of assumption of charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
  1. Lewis Hamilton wins United States GP

Lewis Hamilton passed rival Sebastian Vettel to take a dominant victory in the United States Grand Prix but will have to wait at least one more race if he is to win a fourth world title.

  •  The Mercedes driver is 66 points clear of Vettel, who finished second.
  •  It means Hamilton is almost certain to win the title in Mexico next weekend.
