1) Mumbai Indians won the 2017 Vivo Indian Premier League (IPL) title as it defeated Rising Pune Supergiant by 1 run at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on 21 May 2017. With this Mumbai Indians have now won how many IPL titles? – Three

Explanation: Mumbai Indians became the most successful team in IPL history as it won its third title on 21 May 2017. Rising Pune Supergiant, shepherded by skipper Steve Smith’s masterly 51, requiring 11 off the last over, fell a run short in the finals.

 Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) needed just 130 runs to win the title as Mumbai skidded to the lowest total in a final when batting first, logging 129 for eight. But overcautious batting left Pune team reeling under pressure at the crunch time. Mumbai was powered by Mitchell Johnson’s stupendous bowling (three for 26) at the death.

 Ben Stokes (RPS) was adjudged Player of the Series. David Warner (Sunrisers Hyderabad) won the orange cap for scoring highest runs (641) while his teammate Bhuvneshwar Kumar won the purple cap for most wickets (26).

 Mumbai Indians’ earlier IPL titles came in 2013 and 2015. Chennai Superkings (CSK) and Kolkata Knightriders (KKR) both have won the IPL title twice – CSK in 2010 and 2011 and KKR in 2012 and 2014.

2) Japan’s Softbank Group in association with which country launched a $93 billion tech fund that has been claimed as the world’s largest private equity fund? – Saudi Arabia

Explanation: According to an announcement made on 20 May 2017, Japan’s Softbank and Saudi Arabia’s main sovereign wealth fund Public Investment Fund (PIF) raised over $93 billion to invest in technology sectors such as artificial intelligence and robotics.

 This fund has been claimed to be the largest private equity fund in the world. In addition to Softbank and Saudi Arabia’s PIF, the new fund’s investors include Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Investment, which has committed $15 billion, Apple Inc., Qualcomm, Taiwan’s Foxconn Technology and Japan’s Sharp Corp.

 The new fund made its announcement during the visit of President Donald Trump to Riyadh and the signing of tens of billions of dollars’ worth of business deals between U.S. and Saudi companies.

3) Scientists at US space agency NASA have named a new organism discovered by them after the much-loved former Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. What is the name given to this newly discovered organism? – ‘Solibacillus kalamii’

Explanation: ‘Solibacillus kalamii’ is the name given to a new form of bacteria that has been found only on the International Space Station (ISS) and has not been found on earth. This name is based on A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the former Indian President, who was a renowned aerospace scientist.

 The bacterium was found by researchers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the foremost lab of NASA, on the filters of the International Space Station (ISS). The filter on which the new bug was found remained on board the ISS for 40 months.

 Kalam had his early training at NASA in 1963 before he set up India’s first rocket-launching facility in the fishing village of Thumba in Kerala.

4) Which deadly hailstorm of India was included among the five all-time deadly weather events of the world by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) as announced on 20 May 2017? – The 1888 hailstorm of Moradabad

Explanation: The 1888 hailstorm of Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh) has been identified by the United Nations weather agency – World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), as one of the five all-time deadly weather events of the world. This destructive hailstorm came on 30 April 1888 and killed 246 people and 1600 farm animals on this day. The hailstorms were as huge as the size of oranges and were to up to 2 feet in height at some places.

 The committee of WMO found that the highest mortality rate associated with extreme weather was during a 1970 tropical cyclone what was at the time East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), which killed around 300,000 people.

 Other record-breaking weather events included a 1989 tornado in Bangladesh that killed an estimated 1,300 people, destroying the Manikganj district; a 1994 lightning-caused oil tank fire in Dronka, Egypt, which took 469 lives, while 21 people were killed by a single lightning bolt to a hut in the Manica Tribal Trust Lands in what was then Rhodesia.

5) What is India’s rank in the latest UNWTO’s World Tourism Barometer of international tourist arrivals (ITA)? – 24th

Explanation: India was placed at 24th place in in the revised UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) World Tourism Barometer as of March 2017. It is worth mentioning that India was placed at 41st and 40th places in 2014 and 2015 respectively. The country thus recorded a jump of 16 places as compared to last year.

 However, improvement in India’s rankings is primarily due to inclusion of NRI’s among international tourists. So far only the figures of foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) were compiled in India. However, now India has started compiling the data arrivals of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) also.

 India has taken huge strides in the tourism sector in the last year with its rank in the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI), 2017 showing a 12 places jump from 2015. While UNWTO gives ranking in terms of numbers of ITAs, TTCI is composed of 14 pillars organised into four sub-indices of ‘Enabling Environment’, ‘Travel and Trade Policy and Enabling Conditions’, ‘Infrastructure’ and ‘Natural and Cultural Resources’.
