  1. One-Day Meeting of Directors of 59 Central Institutes of Higher Learning

Rashtrapati Bhavan hosted a one-day meeting of directors of 59 institutes of higher learning in the fields of information technology, engineering science and technology, and planning and architecture on July 19, 2018.

  • This is part of regular interactions of the President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, with such institutions in his capacity as visitor to 146 Central Universities and institutions of higher learning.
  1. Election Commissioner Inaugurates a new Manufacturing Facility For EVM Production

The Election Commissioner Shri Sunil Arora visited Bharat Electronics Limited, Bangalore.

  • BEL has established state-of-the-art secure manufacturing facilities for manufacture of digital certified EVM/VVPATs as per the advise of Technical Experts Committee of ECI. Shri Sunil Arora also reviewed the status of Progress of production of EVMs and VVPATs.
  • During his visit Shri Sunil Arora inaugurated one of the newly set up secured manufacturing facility for EVM production at Military communication Strategic Business Unit at BEL Bangalore Complex.
  1. A world class exhibition on four eminent personalities of Bengal

A world class exhibition on four eminent personalities of Bengal, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, Netaji Subha Chandra Bose, Rishi Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee would be organized very soon at National Library in Kolkata at permanent basis, said Shri Raghvendra Singh, Secretary, Ministry of Culture.

  • Reviewing restoration, renovation and modernization works being carried out by the Central Public Work Department (CPWD) at the Belvedere House of the National Library, the Secretary expressed satisfaction and informed that this house will be illuminated and Light and Sound programmes will be organised to entertain the visitors.
  • Literary festivals would also be held to restore old glories of the building and to make new generations aware of their rich heritage, he added.
  1. Samagra Shiksha Scheme to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education

 

The Department of School Education and Literacy has formulated the Samagra Shiksha – an Integrated Scheme for School Education as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme and it is being implemented throughout the country with effect from the year 2018-19.

  • This programme subsumes the three erstwhile Centrally Sponsored Schemes of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) and Teacher Education (TE).
  • It is an overarching programme for the school education sector extending from pre-school to class XII and aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education at all levels of school education.
  1. Setting up of National Resource Centres for preparing online training material

The Government has proposed to set up National Resource Centres (NRCs) to prepare online training material with focus on latest developments in the discipline, new & emerging trends, pedagogical improvements and methodologies for transacting revised curriculum.

  • In the first phase, 75 discipline-specific National Resource Centres have been identified, under the Ministry’s Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT) located in Central Universities, IISc, IUCAA, IITs, IISERs, NITs, State Universities ; UGC’s Human Resource Development Centres (HRDCs), National Institutes for Technical Teachers Training (NITTTRs), IIITs, Open Universities.
  • Under this initiative, all in-service teachers, irrespective of their subject and seniority have an enabling opportunity to keep abreast of the latest developments in their disciplines through the technology based online refresher course, through SWAYAM platform.
  1. MoU signed between CSIR-NPL and HPCL

CSIR- National Physical laboratory (NPL) has signed a MoU with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) for indigenous development of petroleum certified reference materials (CRMs) under trade name of Bhartiya Niredeshak Dravyas (BNDTM).

  • This will not only ensure maintaining highest  standard quality ecosystem for petroleum products used by all stakeholders including common man but also will save vital foreign exchange through import substitution for CRMs.
  1. Prof Anil D Sahasrabudhe Reappointed AICTE Chairman

The union government has renewed the appointment of Prof Anil D Sahasrabudhe as the chairman of the tenchical and professional education regulator All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

  • Prof. Sahasrabudhe, who was a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati joined AICTE as Chairman on July 17, 2015.
  1. UGC committee to regulate fee for medical courses in Deemed Universities

University Grants Commission (UGC) has constituted a Committee under the Chairpersonship of Prof. R.C. Deka, Former Director, AIIMS, New Delhi to regulate the fees chargeable by self-financed Deemed to be Universities in Medical and Dental Courses.

  • This information was given by the Minister of State (HRD), Dr. Satya Pal Singh in a written reply to a Rajya Sabha question.
  1. UGC Committee on examination Reforms

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has intimated that it has constituted a committee under the Chairpersonship of Prof. M.M. Salunkhe, former Vice Chancellor, Central University, Rajasthan to look into the matters related to examination reforms.

  • The Committee has been asked to submit its report by October, 2018.
  • This information was given by the Minister of State (HRD), Dr. Satya Pal Singh today in a written reply to a Rajya Sabha question.
  1. Nabard award for Repco Micro Finance

 

Repco Micro Finance Ltd, a non-banking finance company promoted by Repco Bank, received Nabard 2018 award for its service to self-help group (SHG) linkage in Tamil Nadu for the fiscal year 2017-18.

  • Since its inception, the NBFC has disbursed loans amounting to Rs 2,500 crore to over 10 lakh beneficiaries through 50,000 SHGs.
  1. Famous Hindi poet Gopal Das Neeraj passes away

Famous Hindi poet Gopal Das Neeraj passed away at the AIIMS trauma centre. He was 93.

  • Neeraj, who was a Padma Bhushan awardee, had suffered a head injury following a fall at his house in Agra.
  • He was awarded Padma Shri in 1991 and Padma Bhushan in 2007.
