  1. 8th India-Oman Joint Commission Meeting Begins in Muscat

The Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu, today co-chaired 8th session of India-Oman Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) along with Minister of Industry, Investment, Trade and Digital Economy of Oman, Dr. Ali bin Masoud Al Sunaidy.

  • Addressing the Joint Commission Suresh Prabhu invited Omani companies to build on their success in India and make investments to benefit from ‘Make in India’ and ‘Invest India’ programmes which are aimed to encourage manufacturing.
  • Areas of discussion in the JCM include cooperation in space, renewable energy, start-up, SMEs, food security, including durable foods and packaging, services sector, tourism sector, exchange of ideas and visit of young entrepreneurs.
  1. Iceland takes up US seat at UN rights council

Iceland was elected to take up the seat left vacant at the United Nations Human Rights Council after the United States quit the body over what it charges was anti-Israel bias.

  • In a vote at the General Assembly, Iceland picked up 172 votes during a secret ballot as the candidate put forward by the regional grouping for that seat.
  1. 2nd National Tourism Conclave organised in Rajasthan

The 2nd National Tourism Conclave was organised in Jaipur as top officials of the state tourism department said a number of “pro-tourism” projects being executed in the state would give a major boost to the sector.

  • The state has something for all kind of tourism lovers and aggressive marketing strategy of the government has further bolstered the sector, he said at the conclave.
  1. Indian Army, FTII join hands to provide acting skills to Baramulla youth

Pune-based Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) has joined hands with the Indian Army to provide acting courses to the youth of Baramulla district.

  • Among various courses related to film and television, one such course in screen acting was organised from June 25 to July 14, which provided an excellent opportunity to 30 youth of Kashmir to learn acting skills.
  • The course was conducted under the FTII’s outreach programme.
  1. Vice president Inaugurates New India Conclave

 

The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu has said that agriculture is the backbone of Indian economy and it should be on the top of the agenda of the Government.

  • He was addressing the gathering after inaugurating the New India Conclave being organised by Y4D Foundation.
  • The Vice President said that there is a need to make agriculture remunerative and farmers must be encouraged to take up allied activities like poultry, horticulture, sericulture, bee keeping, dairy and others to improve income.
  1. Javedkar to inaugurate the Conference of Heads of AYUSH National Institutes

With an aim of upgrading quality of education, research, hospital care facilities in the national AYUSH institutions throughout the country and develop them as light house institutions, All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) under Ministry of AYUSH is organizing two days Conference of Heads of AYUSH National Institutes on 17th and 18th July 2018 at India International Centre, New Delhi.

  • Inaugural session of the conference will be graced by Minister of Human Resource Development Shri Prakash Javadekar and Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH Shri Shripad Yesso Naik.
  • During the deliberations, Vice Chancellors of various Health Universities, Directors of reputed research organizations and around 100 accomplished senior professionals from various national institutes including IIT, DST, DBT, UGC etc are expected to take part in  the event.
  • It is also planned to join hands together and sign MoUs with Sports Authority of India, Indian Institute of Technology for collaborative ventures.
  1. Conference on ‘Empowering Women: Fostering Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Sustainability’

The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu has said that empowerment of women is central to achieving the objective of inclusive, equitable and sustainable development and it is not only a national goal but also a global agenda.

  • He was addressing the gathering after inaugurating the International Conference on ‘Empowering Women: Fostering Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Sustainability’ organized by the NITI Aayog and Shri Ram College of Commerce.
  • The Lt. Governor of Puducherry, Dr. Kiran Bedi, the Vice Chancellor of Delhi University, Prof. Yogesh Tyagi and the CEO of NITI Ayog, Shri Amitabh Kant and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
  1. Piyush Goyal Inaugurates the MAHAGENCO Pipe Conveyor System

The Union Minister of Railways, Finance, Corporate Affairs and Coal, Shri Piyush Goyal inaugurated the MAHAGENCO Pipe Conveyor System for coal transportation from cluster of mines of Western Coalfields Limited (WCL).

  • The first Pipe Conveyor project of 6.3 Km length is a dedicated system for Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station of MAHAGENCO by taking coal from Bhatadi OC mine, Chandrapur Area and feeding to MGR at Padmapur.
  • The second project of approx. 20 Km length will have five feeding Open Cast Mines of Nagpur Area of WCL, namely Gondegaon, Kamptee, Inder, Bhanegaon and Singhori dedicated to Khaparkheda and Koradi Power Plants of Maharashtra State Power Generation Co. Ltd. (MSPGCL).
  • This project is being carried out in two phases.
  • On completion of this project, road transportation of coal will be stopped and 100 per cent coal production from these mines of WCL will be transported through Koradi & Khaperkheda Coal pipe conveyor.
  1. USA win first Athletics World Cup

The USA has won the first Athletics World Cup as Great Britain came third at the London Stadium.

  • America took the crown by 57 points ahead of Poland, who finished second.
  • The USA banked £370,000, which is split evenly between the squad.
