  1. Cabinet approves Repositioning of North Eastern Council

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the proposal of Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) for the nomination of the Union Home Minister as ex-officio Chairman of North Eastern Council (NEC) – a statutory body with Governors and Chief Ministers of all the eight North Eastern States as its Member.

  • The Cabinet also approved that Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of DoNER would serve as Vice Chairman of the Council.
  • NEC implements various projects through the State and Central agencies. Under the new arrangement with Home Minister as Chairman and Minister of DoNER as Vice Chairman, NEC and all the Governors and Chief Ministers of North Eastern States as Member would provide a forum for discussing inter-state matters more comprehensively and also consider common approaches to be taken in future.
  1. Cabinet approves proposal for withdrawal of Nalanda University (Amendment) Bill, 2013

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the proposal for withdrawal of Nalanda University (Amendment) Bill, 2013 pending in the Rajya Sabha.

  • The Nalanda University was established on the basis of a Joint Press Statement at the 4th East Asia Summit held in Thailand in October, 2009, which supported its establishment as a non-state, non-profit, secular and self-governing international institution. Subsequently, the Nalanda University Act, 2010 was passed by the Parliament and came into effect from 25thNovember 2010.
  • The present proposal is for moving a motion in Rajya Sabha withdrawing the Nalanda University (Amendment) Bill, 2013 introduced in Rajya Sabha on August 26, 2013 to amend certain existing provisions of the Nalanda University Act, 2010 and add some new provisions.
  1. Cabinet approves ‘Three Year Action Plan of Agricultural Education Division & ICAR Institutes

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the continuation of the Three Year Action Plan (2017-2020) of the scheme for Agricultural Education Division and ICAR Institutes with an outlay of Rs.2225.46 crore[Rs. 2197.51 crore + Rs. 27.95 crore (State share) as salary component for AICRP-HS]for strengthening and developing higher agricultural education in India.

It comprises of:

  • “Strengthening and Development of Higher Agricultural Education in India – Rs. Rs.2050.00 crore;
  • ICAR-National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (NAARM) – Rs. 24.25 crore and
  • ICAR – Central Institute of Women in Agriculture (CIWA) including All India Coordinated Research Project on Home Science (AICRP-HS) – Rs.151.21 crore.
  1. Raksha Mantri Inaugurates BEL representative office in Vietnam

Raksha Mantri, Smt Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the first Representative Office of Navratna Defence PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in Hanoi, Vietnam.

  • BEL, India’s leading defence electronics company, is fast expanding its global presence, putting its best foot forward to give a thrust to exports worldwide, especially South East Asian countries such as the Republic of Union of Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines.
  • The Representative Office will aim to promote BEL’s exports in areas such as Weapon Systems, Radar Systems, Naval Systems, Military Communication Systems, Electronic Warfare Systems, Combat Management System and Coastal Surveillance System.
  1. 10th Meeting of Global Alliance to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis

Shri J P Nadda, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare inaugurated the 10th meeting of Global Alliance to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GAELF).

  • During his inaugural address, Shri Nadda said that India as a Global leader is committed to eliminating Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) transmission and disease burden so that our future generations are free from Lymphatic Filariasis.
  • He further stated that India will always welcome newer initiatives and research to translate into the Filariasis elimination programme.
  • At the event, Shri Nadda also gave away the GAELF awards to 11 countries- Cambodia, Cook Islands, Egypt, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Niue, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Togo, Tonga and Vanuatu, for successfully interrupting the transmission.
  • The Union Health Minister also released the Accelerated Plan for Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) 2018 for India.
  1. Cashless Ticketing through ‘Utsonmobile’ app developed by CRIS

Continuing towards digitalization and moving towards becoming a cashless economy, the initiative of faster and more techno-advanced transactions in Indian Railways is being taken up, the Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS) has developed a mobile based application ‘utsonmobile’.

  • The ‘utsonmobile’ application enables booking and cancellation of unreserved tickets, issue and renewal of season and platform tickets, check and load R-wallet balance and helps maintain user profile management and booking history.
  1. Thawarchand Gehlot chairs ‘3rd Meeting of National Council of Senior Citizens’

Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment chaired the “3rd Meeting of National Council of Senior Citizens(NCSrC)” convened by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

  • Addressing on the occasion, Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot said that the government is committed to the welfare of senior citizens and several new initiatives have been taken during past four years.
  • The NCSrC advises Central and State Governments on the entire gamut of issues related to welfare of senior citizens and enhancement of their quality of life.
  • The NCSrC meets at least twice a year. Its first meeting was held on 30th August, 2016 and the second meeting was held on 19th June 2017.
  1. NITI Aayog to launch Composite Water Management Index

The objective of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas can be fully achieved once the benefits of the interventions reach the last mile.

  • As a step beyond measurement of outcomes, NITI Aayog has come out with various indices that not only fulfills its mandate of cooperative and competitive federalism but also challenges States and Union Territories (UTs) them to meet the aspirations of the new India.
  • Furthering this mandate, NITI Aayog has come up with the Composite Water Management Index as a useful tool to assess and improve the performance in efficient management of water resources.
  • This index is an attempt to inspire States and UTs towards efficient and optimal utilization of water, and recycling thereof with a sense of urgency.
  1. Maharashtra Inks MoU with Canada’s Quebec Province for Greater Economic Cooperation

The Maharashtra government and Canada’s Quebec province have signed a pact to increase the economic cooperation, specially in areas of information technology, biotechnology, artificial intelligence and welfare of the tribal community.

  • The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to this effect with was signed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard  during his week-long tour to the US and Canada.
  1. Rana Kapoor re-appointed MD & CEO for Yes Bank

Yes Bank shareholders have approved the re-appointment of Rana Kapoor as the bank’s chief executive officer and managing director for a period of three years.

  • The AGM also approved the appointment of Subhash Chander Kalia and Ajai Kumar as non-executive non-independent directors.
  1. Sulabh founder bags Nikkei Asia Prize

Noted social reformer and founder of Sulabh International Bindeshwar Pathak was honoured with Japan’s prestigious ‘Nikkei Asia Prize for Culture and Community’.

  • The award honours people in Asia who have made significant contributions in one of the three areas: regional growth; science, technology and innovation; and culture and community.
  • Former PM Manmohan Singh and Infosys Chairman Narayan Murti are among the few Indians who have won the prize in the past.
