  1. Giriraj Singh launches MSME Delayed Payment Portal – MSME Samadhaan

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Shri Giriraj Singh launched MSME Delayed Payment Portal – MSME Samadhaan.

  •  It will micro and small entrepreneurs across the country to directly register their cases relating to delayed payments by Central Ministries/Departments/CPSEs/State Governments. Shri Arun Kumar Panda, Secretary, Ministry of MSME along with other dignitaries and senior officials from the Ministry were also present.
  •  Speaking on the occasion, Shri Giriraj Singh said that the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development (MSMED) Act, 2006 contains provisions to deal with cases of delayed payment to Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs).
  •  As per the provisions, the buyer is liable to pay compound interest with monthly rests to the supplier on the amount at three times of the bank rate notified by Reserve Bank in case he does not make payment to the supplier for the supplies of goods or services within 45 days of the day of acceptance of the goods/service or the deemed day of acceptance.
  1. India and World Bank sign $200 Million Loan Agreement for the Assam

The Government of India and the World Bank signed a $200 million Loan Agreement for the Assam Agribusiness and Rural Transformation Project.

  •  The Project will support the Government of Assam to facilitate agri-business investments, increase agriculture productivity and market access, and enable small farm holders produce crops that are resilient to recurrent floods or droughts in the state.
  •  The Project will be implemented in over 16 Districts of Assam. Over 500,000 farming households will directly benefit from the Project. At least 30 percent women are expected to participate in project activities. Specific focus will be given to women-led enterprises and their participation in the decision-making process of farmer producer organizations.
  •  The $200 million loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), has a 7-year grace period, and a maturity of 16.5 years.
  1. SBI extends Rs 2317 crore for 43 solar power projects

State Bank of India signed an agreement with seven companies for funding solar power energy following a line of credit from World Bank.

  •  The seven companies include Adani Group, JSW Energy, Hinduja Renewables, Tata Renewables Energy, Azure Power, Cleantech Solar and Hero Solar Energy.
  •  The bank has funded 43 projects rooftop solar power projects amounting Rs 2317 crore with the aggregate capacity of 475 mw.
  •  SBI has availed $ 625 mn from World Bank.
  1. Government sets up Arun Jaitley led panel on PSU bank mergers

Moving ahead with reforms in the public sector banking space, the government has constituted a ministerial panel headed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley that will oversee merger proposals of state-owned banks.

  •  The other members of the panel include Railway and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
  •  The panel will oversee the proposals coming from boards of PSBs for consolidation.
  1. Microsoft joins IIT Kharagpur to create ‘deeper’ search engine

In a bid to take on Google Search, Microsoft said it is working with professors from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kharagpur towards developing a system that can form the basis for a deeper, more meaningful search engine.

  •  The new search engine could assist users looking for subjective information and trusted opinions, the company said in a statement.
  •  Bing is a web search engine owned and operated by Microsoft.
  1. Vice Admiral Ajit Kumar P assumes charge as the Vice Chief of Naval Staff

Vice Admiral Ajit Kumar P, AVSM, VSM has assumed charge as the Vice Chief of Naval Staff from Vice Admiral Karambir Singh AVSM at a formal ceremony held at South Block, New Delhi.

  •  Vice Admiral Karambir Singh proceeds to Visakhapatnam and is scheduled to take over as Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command on 31 Oct 17.
  1. Venezuela’s opposition awarded Sakharov Prize

The democratic opposition and political prisoners in Venezuela have won the European Union’s Sakharov Prize for human rights.

  •  The European Parliament said it wanted to reward the courage of students and politicians fighting for freedom in the face of a repressive government.
  •  The Venezuelan laureates follow the footsteps of last year’s winners, two Yazidi women who escaped sexual enslavement by Isis group.
  1. Anupam Kher receives ‘Pramod Mahajan Smriti Award’

Veteran Bollywood actor Anupam Kher received Pramod Mahajan Smriti Award in Pune.

  •  The veteran actor was recently appointed as Chairman of Film and Television Institute of India.
  1. Mexican Grand Prix: Hamilton takes fourth title

Britain’s Lewis Hamilton has been crowned Formula One world champion after he finished ninth in a dramatic Mexican Grand Prix.

  •  The race was won by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen but Mercedes’ Hamilton clinched his fourth drivers’ championship after Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was unable to win the race following collisions between the trio on the first lap.
  1. Tamil writer Melanmai Ponnusamy passes away

Tamil writer and Sahitya Akademi award winner Melanmai Ponnusamy passed away. He was 66.

  •  He won the award in 2008 for his short story collection, Minsara poo.
  •  He had published 22 short story collections, six novels, six novellas and a collection of essays.
  •  His first short story was published in Semmalar, the literary magazine of the Communist Part of India (Marxist).
