  1. Spanish PM dismisses Catalan government

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced the immediate sacking of Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont and his government and called new elections in the region on December 21.

  •  This followed the decision taken by the Catalan parliament earlier in the day to unilaterally declare independence of the region in the northeast of Spain.
  •  Rajoy announced the measures after a special cabinet meeting called at his residence in the Palacio de la Moncloa to decide how to apply Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution.

 

  1. 11th World Congress on Adolescent Health held in New Delhi

The 11th World Congress on Adolescent Health was held in New Delhi during 27th to 29th October 2017.

  •  The theme for World Congress on Adolescent Health 2017 was ‘Investing in Adolescent Health—the Future is Now’.
  •  This event was hosted by MAMTA Health Institute for Mother and Child and the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI).

 

  1. Dalai Lama addresses peace conference in Imphal

The 14th Dalai Lama during his three-day maiden visit to Manipur addressed at the International Peace Conference in the Imphal

  •  The conference was aimed at promoting peace and harmony in the northeastern region.
  •  The conference brought a host of religious leaders from various countries, including Buddhist monks from South-East Asia and Myanmar, under one platform.

 

  1. RIL first Indian company to cross Rs 6 trillion market cap

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) became the first Indian company to cross Rs6 trillion market capitalisation after its shares surged over 75% so far this year and hit a fresh lifetime high.

  •  The stock added nearly Rs3 trillion market cap since April after its telecom arm Reliance Jio started charging its customers.

 

  1. Martina Hingis announces retirement from pro tennis

Hall of Famer Martina Hingis, one of only six women’s players to hold the No. 1 ranking in both singles and doubles at the same time, announced her retirement.

  •  Hingis won 13 major doubles titles, along with five in singles and seven in mixed doubles.
  •  The Swiss star still is the youngest Grand Slam champion in history, having won the Wimbledon doubles title when she was just 15.

 

  1. FIFA U-17 World Cup 2017: England Crowned Champions

England made a remarkable comeback from two goals down to outclass three-time runners-up Spain 5-2 and clinch their maiden FIFA U-17 World Cup at a packed Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata.

  •  England have now done a FIFA double in the same year, having won the FIFA U-20 World Cup in June.
  •  Earlier Brazil beat Mali 2-0 in the third-place playoff to earn a consolation after they lost to England in the semi-final.

 

  1. Pro Kabaddi League: Hat-trick for Patna Pirates

Patna Pirates beat Gujarat Fortunegiants 55-38 to clinch its third straight title in the ProKabaddi league at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai in season 5.

  •  Raider Pardeep Narwal (19 points) starred for Patna to single-handedly dominate the match and clinch the all-important victory.
  •  Top-scorer: Pardeep Narwal (Patna Pirates)
  •  Best debutant: Sachin (Gujarat Fortunegiants)
  •  Best raider: Pardeep Narwal
  •  Best defender: Surender Nada (Haryana Steelers)
  •  Most valuable player: Pardeep Narwal
