- Nepal, India to conduct first joint tiger count
For the first time, Nepal and India will undertake a joint tiger census next month in their national parks, forests and protected areas.
- Conservation authorities and experts would install cameras in various locations in tiger habitats as well as in buffer zones to capture and track the movements of the tiger.
- The counting of tigers will begin from the second week of November.
- Thaawarchand Gehlot Flags off “WALKATHON” for Older Persons
To mark the ‘International day of Older Persons’ on 2nd October, more than 5000 participants gathered at India Gate for a noble cause to spread the message of caring and giving respect to older persons and senior citizens.
- This year’s theme was “Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talents, Contributions and Participation of Older Persons in Society.
- Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot Union Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment along with the Minister of State Shri Krishan Pal Gurjar, took the pledge with other dignitaries and 5000 participants.
- Then the “Walkathon” was flagged off by Shri Thawarchand Gehlot & MOS Shri Krishan Pal Gurjar and they also took part in 1 km Walkathon with all the dignitaries.
- Rajghat gets Mahatma Statue, for the first time
Rajghat, the Samadhi of the Father of the Nation in the national capital , has for the first time acquired a new feature that could appeal to the large number of visitors.
- Vice-President of India Shri M.Venkaiah Naidu unveiled a 1.80 metre tall bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of the 148 Birth Anniversary of the champion of country’s independence.
- The statue, sculpted by the renowned Shri Ram Sutar is installed in the Parking Area of Rajghat Samadhi Complex at a cost of Rs.8.73 lakhs. It is mounted on a two feet high pedestal clad with granite.
- The famous message of Gandhi ji “Be the Change You Wish to See” is inscribed on the front side of the pedestal. Installation of the Statue is a part of a large number of improvement works at Rajghat undertaken during the last three years.
- Fitch lowers India’s growth forecast to 6.9%
Fitch Ratings has lowered India’s economic growth forecast for the current fiscal to 6.9 per cent from 7.4 per cent after the GDP growth “unexpectedly faltered” in the April-June quarter.
- The Asian Development Bank (ADB) had last month slashed India’s GDP growth forecast for the current fiscal to 7 per cent from 7.4 per cent owing to weakness in private consumption, manufacturing output and business investment.
- India had posted a 7.1 per cent growth in 2016-17.
- GIFT-IFSC ranks at 10th place in global financial centres index
India’s first IFSC has been featured at the tenth place in the latest September 2017 edition of Global Financial Centres Index 22 (GFCI) – London.
- The Gandhinagar-based IFSC has ranked ahead of other leading financial hubs at Luxembourg, Seoul, Abu Dhabi, Toronto and Beijing.
- GIFT has been put in the same league as other top financial centres at New York and Hong Kong.
- US ships first lot of crude to India
The first shipment of US crude oil to India arrived at Paradip Port in Odisha, as part of the two million barrels contracted by India.
- The shipment follows recent commitments to US oil purchases by Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), both of which have placed orders for over 2 million barrels from the US.
- US crude oil shipments to India have the potential to boost bilateral trade by up to $2 billion.
- President Appoints Commission to Examine Sub Categorization of OBC
The President on 02.10.2017, in exercise of the powers conferred by article 340 of the Constitution appointed a Commission to examine the sub-categorisation of Other Backward Classes.
The composition of the Commission is as follows:
- Chairperson -Justice (Retd.) G. Rohini.
- Member -Dr. J.K. Bajaj.
- Member(Ex-officio)-Director, Anthropological Survey of India.
- Member (Ex-officio)-Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India.
- Secretary of the Commission-Joint Secretary, Department of SJ&E, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
- Nobel Prizes in Physiology or Medicine
The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institute has decided to award the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly to Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young for their discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm.
- Hall was born in New York, Rosbash in Kansas City, and they both worked at Brandeis University. Michael Young was born in Miami and worked at Rockefeller University.
- The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, administered by the Nobel Foundation, is awarded once a year for outstanding discoveries in the fields of life sciences and medicine.
- It is one of five Nobel Prizes established in 1895 by Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, in his will.
- As of 2015, 106 Nobel Prizes in Physiology or Medicine have been awarded to 198 men and 12 women.
- The first Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded in 1901 to the German physiologist Emil von Behring, for his work on serum therapy and the development of a vaccine against diphtheria.
- The first woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, Gerty Cori, received it in 1947 for her role in elucidating the metabolism of glucose.
