  1. G7 Summit begins in Italy

The two-day G7 Summit, that will focus on issues surrounding security and growth, began on 26 May in Italy.

Those participating in the Taormina Summit include German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron, along with the Prime Ministers of Italy, Japan and the UK, Paolo Gentiloni, Shinzo Abe and Theresa May respectively.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Council President Donald Tusk will be representing the European Union at the summit.

  1. Indo-Thailand Siam Bharat 17: HADR

Indo-Thailand Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Table Top Exercise 2017 is in progress at Chiang Mai, Thailand from 22 May to 26 May 17 between the Indian Air Force and Royal Thailand Air Force (RTAF).

This is second such exercise to be conducted between the two Air Forces.

The aim of the bilateral exercise is to evolve SOPs for planning and executing relief missions during unforeseen natural calamities like Tsunami, earthquakes, cyclones, floods etc.

  1. NATO Leaders’ Meeting 2017 held in Belgium

The NATO Leaders’ Meeting 2017 was held at NATO’s new Headquarters in Belgium, Brussels.

Canada, along with 11 other countries, founded NATO in 1949 on the fundamental values of democracy, individual liberty, human rights, and the rule of law.

Next summit will be held in Istanbul, Turkey.

  1. Dhola-Sadiya bridge named after Bhupen Hazarika

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the country’s longest river bridge — the Dhola-Sadiya bridge.

Spanning 9.15 km, the bridge is built across the Lohit river which is a tributary of the Brahmaputra river.

He named the bridge after iconic singer Bhupen Hazarika.

The Dhola-Sadiya bridge will reduce the travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh from six hours to just one hour as the distance will shrink by 165 km.

After inaugurating the Rs. 2,056 crore bridge at Sadia in Assam’s Tinsukia district, Mr. Modi walked a short distance over it.

The Steel Authority of India Limited has supplied around 90 per cent, or around 30,000 tonnes of steel, including TMT, structurals and plates, for the construction of the bridge.

The construction of the bridge began in 2011 under the public-private-partnership, which is 3.55 km longer than Mumbai’s Bandra-Worli Sea Link, making it the longest bridge in India.

  1. Tapan Ray to be the next Economic Affairs Secretary

The central government on 25 May said that Corporate Affairs Secretary Tapan Ray will be the next Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, under the Ministry of Finance from 1 June, 2017.

He will replace Shaktikanta Das who is retiring.

The government had extended Das’s tenure by three months till May 31, 2017.

  1. Syed Ghayorul Hasan Rizvi assumes charge of Chairman of NCM

Syed Ghayorul Hasan Rizvi assumed charge of the Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities in New Delhi.

Syed Ghayorul Hasan Rizvi is a graduate in Arts and also holds Diploma in Mechanics.

He served as Chairman, U.P Minority Finance Development Corporation Ltd.

  1. Jaideep Mazumdar appointed next Ambassador of India to Philippines

Jaideep Mazumdar has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Philippines.

The 1989 batch IFS officer is presently Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs.

He is expected to take up the assignment shortly.

  1. Former Punjab DGP KPS Gill passes away

Kanwar Pal Singh Gill, one of India’s most celebrated cops, passed away in New Delhi. He was 82.

Popularly known as the ‘Lion of Punjab’ and ‘Super Cop’, Gill has also been an advisor to Gujarat and Chhattisgarh governments, a hockey administrator, and a prolific commentator on security issues.

He was honoured with Padma Shri in 1989 for his outstanding work as a civil servant.
