  1. International Nurses Day: 12 May

International Nurses Day (IND) is an international day celebrated around the world on 12 May (the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth) of each year, to mark the contributions nurses make to society.

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has celebrated this day since 1965.

This year, the theme is “Nurses: A Voice to Lead, Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals”.

  1. 19th Session of India-Italy Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation

19th Session of India-Italy Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation was held during 11th – 12th May, 2017 in Rome.

The Joint Commission was co-chaired by the Minister of Economic Development Mr. Carlo Calenda from the Italian side and by the Minister of Commerce and Industry Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman from the Indian side.

Both Sides reiterated the importance of the JCEC towards the development of bilateral economic and trade relations through facilitating dialogue and enhancing cooperation on a wide range of issues of mutual interest.

  1. PM inaugurates hospital in Dickoya

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has inaugurated a hospital in Dickoya in Central Province of Sri Lanka, built with Indian assistance.

Prime Minister Modi later addressed a large gathering of Indian Origin Tamils at Norwood.

The Prime Minister also met representatives of the Ceylon Workers Congress, and the Tamil Progressive Alliance.

Earlier, PM attended International Vesak day celebration and also visited the Seema Malaka Temple.

  1. Army brings back CASO as part of counter-terror operations in Kashmir

The Indian Army has decided to re-introduce cordon and search operations (CASO) as a “permanent feature” of its campaign against militants, nearly 15 years after the practice was abandoned.

CASO will be carried out in a major way in militancy-hit areas of Kulgam, Pulwama, Tral, Budgam and Shopian in south Kashmir.

The Army had discontinued CASO following stiff opposition from the local population.

  1. RBI puts restriction on Uco Bank’s business

Reserve Bank of India has put restriction on Uco Bank’s lending and branch expansion plans as the state-run lender made net losses for the two successive fiscal amid severe stress on asset quality.

There would be check on management compensation and directors’ fees as well as the sector regulator has invoked prompt corrective action (PCA) for the bank, aiming to bring it back on recovery path.

Uco has become the second lender to face business restrictions after IDBI Bank after RBI revised its PCA framework last month.

  1. Base year of WPI, IIP revised to 2011-12

The government has revised the base year of wholesale price index (WPI) and index of industrial production (IIP) to 2011-12 from 2004-05.

WPI has been changed six times so far since 1942 and this happens to be the 7th revision.

The IIP base year has also been changed to ensure that it remains more relevant in the years that it is operational.

Points to Remember

A base year is the year used for comparison in the measure of a business activity or economic index.

  1. Amitabh Bachchan Appointed WHO Goodwill Ambassador For Hepatitis

Celebrated Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan, a Hepatitis B conqueror, was appointed the WHO Goodwill Ambassador for the Hepatitis awareness programme in southeast Asia region.

The veteran actor has been brought on board to boost awareness and intensify action to arrest the Hepatitis epidemic.

The actor will lend his voice and support to public awareness programmes that aim to scale up preventive measures and advocate for early diagnosis and treatment of viral Hepatitis to reduce the disease burden.

  1. Justice Mukul Mudgal elected head of FIFA Governance Committee

Justice (Retd.) Mukul Mudgal was elected as head of FIFA’s governance committee at the world football governing body’s 67th Congress in Bahrain’s capital city of Manama.

Justice Mudgal’s name was proposed by the FIFA Council for the vacant position of the governance chief after Miguel Maduro was reportedly ‘fired’ for his role in blocking Russian World Cup official Vitaly Mutko from retaining his seat on ruling council.

  1. Vinay Mohan Kwatra named India’s new ambassador to France

Seasoned diplomat Vinay Mohan Kwatra, currently a joint secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, has been appointed as India’s next ambassador to France.

A 1988-batch foreign service officer, Kwatra will succeed Mohan Kumar, who is retiring.

Apart from having experience of dealing with the UN organisations such as International Labour Organisation (ILO) and World Health Organisation (WHO), he has served in Indian diplomatic missions in China and the US.

  1. Bahamas elects Hubert Minnis as new prime minister

The Bahamas has elected Hubert Minnis of the Free National Movement (FNM) as their new leader, defeating Perry Christie’s Progressive Liberal Party in a 34-5 parliamentary split, according to local media.

Christie, finishing his second non-consecutive term as prime minister, was criticised for defiantly boasting that “not even God” could stop him.

The election was closely monitored by international observers the Caribbean Community, the Commonwealth of Nations, the Organization of American States and the United States.

The Bahamas, known officially as the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, is an archipelagic state within the Lucayan Archipelago.

Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas while Dollar is its Currency.

  1. V K Saraswat appointed new JNU Chancellor

Scientist and former director general of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), V K Saraswat, was appointed as Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Saraswat succeeds former ISRO chairman K Kasturirangan, who completed his term on March 30 this year.

Saraswat has been appointed for a term of five years.

A PhD in combustion engineering, Saraswat played a very significant role in the development of the country’s first liquid propulsion engine — Devil.

  1. Vinesh, Sakshi, Divya win silver medals at Asian Wrestling Championships

After bronze medal for Ritu Phogat at Asian Wrestling Championships, Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat and Divya Kakran added silver medals to India’s kitty at the Asian event at the KD Jadhav Stadium in New Delhi.

Where Ritu won bronze in the 48kg category, Vinesh and Sakshi brought laurels to the country in the 55kg and 60kg categories respectively.

Later in the day, Kakran won a silver medal in the 69kg category.
