  • The World Press Freedom Day observed internationally, was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 following a recommendation adopted at the 26th Session of UNESCO’s General Conference in 1991
  1. UN Observed 2 May 2017 : First World Tuna Day

 

The United Nations is marking the first World Tuna Day with calls to conserve one of the globe’s most popular fish to be caught and eaten.

  • It is a saltwater fish that belongs to the tribe Thunnini, a sub-grouping of the mackerel family (Scombridae) .
  1. HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar launched Vidya-Veerta Abhiyan and‘Wall of Valour’ IN Educational Institutions.

Union Minister of Human Resource Development Shri Prakash Javadekar launched Students for soldiers- a nationwide  VIDYA VEERTA ABHIYAN and‘Wall of Valour’ IN Educational Institutions to encourage Universities and educational institutions across the country to display portraits of Param Veer Chakra-decorated soldiers  in New Delhi on 02 May 2017.

  • Organising of such events help in changing atmosphere in our colleges and universities.
  • It is just to revive the patriotic feeling in our youth
  1. DRDO developed Defence Equipment handed over to Security Forces

With the view of empowering Indian security forces effectively,Defence Minister Arun Jaitley on Monday handed over several types of equipment which are developed by DRDO to Indian security forces.

  • The defence devices were handed over in New Delhi to NDRF included ‘E-Nasika’, a hand-held equipment which is capable of rapid detection of chemical agents well below their toxic limits. Minister Jaitley also handed over to NSG an equipment called ‘OTL-300’, It can instantly detect partially camouflaged optical elements, such as telescopes, binoculars and night vision devices.
  • The ‘OTL-300’ was given to Delhi Police also.
  • These devices will help Indian security forces more powerful and will be able to detect and eradicate threats effectively.
  1. Department of Telecom (DoT) Launched Tarang Sanchar

Department of Telecom launched Tarang Sanchar in New Delhi on May 2, a web portal for Information sharing on Mobile Towers and EMF Emission Compliances and which will go a long way in clearing the myths and misconceptions of public on mobile towers and emissions from them.

  • The Telecom Minister expressed the hope that the portal will empower common man to know at the convenience of a mouse click, about towers working in a particular locality and whether they are compliant to the EMF emission norms defined by the Government.
  • In his address, the Chairman, TRAI Shri R S Sharma said that the portal will be a mile stone for transparency, fair play, citizen empowerment and will finally lead to a knowledge economy
  1. New Premier Train for the Mumbai-Goa route :Tejas  Express

Railways will unveil a new premier train service between Mumbai and Goa in June with state-of-the-art facilities, called the Tejas Express.

  • Comprising executive class and chair cars, Tejas coaches will be equipped with 22 new features, including fire and smoke detection and suppression systems and the improved aesthetics.
  • After the Mumbai-Goa run, the Tejas service, which was promised in the budget, is likely to be pressed on the Delhi-Chandigarh route.
  1. Khattar takes steps to minimise Road Accident Casualties

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar launched the ‘Haryana Vision Zero’ campaign in collaboration with NASSCOMM Foundation with an aim to reduce deaths due to road accidents on 2 May 2017.

  • “The objective of the forum is to generate discussion between all stakeholders, on ideas, strategies and concerns, and to present the same to the Central government, in order to influence the current legislation process, and forge a collective path for road safety reform in the country with Haryana leading the way,”.
  • An MoU was also signed between the Transport Department of Haryana and NASSCOM and World Resources Institute (WRI) to take the project to 10 districts of the state.
  • While addressing the workshop, the chief minister said road safety was a serious issue and that the state government had adopted a vision to achieve target of “zero deaths in road accidents”.
  1. Mallikarjun Kharge appointed New Chairman of PAC

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge is appointed the new chairman of the 21-member Public Accounts Committee of Parliament.

  • Kharge replaces Congress leader K V Thomas whose term ended on April 30.
  • The Parliamentary panel, which is headed by an opposition leader, has a majority of its members from the ruling NDA. The new committee has only two new faces while the remaining members have been renominated. Subhash Chandra Baheria and Ram Shankar, both of the BJP, have replaced their party members Richard Hay and Janardan Singh Sigriwal.

Points To Remember:-

  • PAC  became a Parliamentary committee on January 26, 1950. Since 1967, a convention has been established whereby an eminent leader from the opposition in Lok Sabha is appointed as its chairperson.
  • The Committee on Public Accounts is the oldest Parliamentary committee that examines the accounts showing the appropriation of sums granted by Parliament for expenditure of Government of India and such other accounts of autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies.
  • The PAC is formed every year with a strength of not more than 22 members of which 15 are from Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Parliament, and 7 from Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament .
  1. Oorja CAPFs Talent-hunt inaugurated in Jharkhand

Jharkhand Governor Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the Oorja CAPFs  under-19 football talent hunt tournament at the Mega Sports Complex.

  • Its aim is to select talented players and give them opportunity at the national and international level.
  • She said that Jharkhand produced talented sports personalities like M S Dhoni, Deepika Kumari, Saurav Tiwari, Sumerai Tete and others.
  • Tete is the the brand ambassador of the tournament.
  • The Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) have been tasked to conduct Oorja – CAPFs Under-19 Football Talent Hunt Tournament  2017.
  • CAPFs are jointly organizing the tournament under the aegis of All India Police Sports Control Board throughout the country between May 1 and 15.
  1. Mark Selby retains Snooker World Title

England’s Mark Selby produced a magnificent comeback to beat John Higgins 18-15 in the final of the World snooker championship and win the global crown for the third time.

  • Selby became only the fourth player after Steve Davis, Stephen Hendry and Ronnie O’Sullivan to win back-to-back titles since the event was first held at The Crucible in 1977.
